On a foggy June 27th morning we motored from anchor in Onset, Massachusetts through the Cape Cod Canal marking the beginning of new territory for us to explore. At the western entrance of the 13 mile long canal stands the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with its huge windmill with its top blade hidden by fog in the photo. The T. S. Kennedy is its training ship which takes Transportation and Engineering student majors to sea from New Years through March. There are trails along both sides of the Canal for non-motorized vehicles and both sides were busy with walkers, bikers, joggers, roller bladers and fishing folks.
We sailed north through Cape Cod Bay using our radar to keep track of vessels in the fog. Fog lifted and we followed this powerboat in past the lighthouse to pick up a mooring in the harbor at Scituate, Massachusetts. Scituate is a seaside village close to the home of our son-in-law, Patrick's, family, the McDonnells, who live in Marshfield. Laurie and Mike were very gracious hosts to share their life with us over the weekend.
A nice perk of hanging on this mooring was using the launch service to get back and forth to the dock on shore instead of using our dinghy. Laurie and Mike visited us on Priority and we took the launch ashore as we visited with them. Mike and Laurie have a big boat project ashore fixing up their new 34' Tartan sailboat with many happy sails planned for the future.
After a great visit ashore, Mike was our helmsman "autopilot" as we sailed for Hull Bay among the Boston Islands. Although the weather for the week has been unusually cloudy and threatening for the area, we had a beautiful sail up the coast to sail right through Hull Cut.
With Mike navigating his local waters off Boston's coast, Captain Jay takes a moment to pause for the photographer in front of Boston Lighthouse -sunshine, wind, nice sail,good company - all is good.
Priority rides in Hull Bay on the McDonnell's mooring. You can see our white boat below the crane arm on the town dock where we could land our dinghy to come ashore. Jay and Mike are still busy talking serious boat talk.
It was a great visit with Laurie and Mike. We plan to visit Hull and the Boston Islands for a few days before we travel on north. Thank you, Mike & Laurie.
